Overview

Solar-plus-storage-plus-charging (often abbreviated PV-ESS-EV) integrates a photovoltaic array, a battery energy storage system and DC/AC charge points into one controlled microgrid at a single site. PV output is consumed first by charging vehicles, surplus energy is stored in the battery, and any remaining deficit is drawn from (or exported to) the grid. The objective is to maximise renewable self-consumption, reduce the effective cost of charging energy, and stabilise the site's import profile.

How it works

A hybrid inverter or PCS acts as the common coupling point for PV strings, battery racks and the grid. The EMS continuously compares forecast PV output, real-time charging demand and battery state of charge, then dispatches three flows: direct PV-to-vehicle, PV-to-battery, and battery-to-vehicle. Time-of-use tariffs and demand-charge limits shape the schedule, while an optional V2G or vehicle-to-load mode can add a fourth flow. On cloudy days the battery discharges into the charge points; on high-PV days surplus is either stored or exported.

Advantages

  • Maximises renewable self-consumption at the point of use
  • Lowers the effective cost per kWh delivered to vehicles
  • Reduces grid import and thus demand charges
  • Provides resilience during outages when islanding is enabled
  • Improves site ESG and green-marketing positioning
  • Uses land already dedicated to parking or carports

Considerations

  • Highest capex of the three sub-systems combined
  • PV output is intermittent and seasonally variable
  • Requires larger footprint: carports, array and battery room
  • Control logic is significantly more complex
  • Battery is cycled more often, affecting warranty terms
  • Permitting covers PV, storage and grid connection simultaneously

Applications

  • Workplace and campus charging
  • Retail and shopping-centre car parks
  • Fleet depots with daytime dwell time
  • Public fast-charging hub with adjacent land
  • Highway service areas
  • Municipal and public-sector charging sites

Cost breakdown

PV modules and mounting typically account for 25-35% of total capex, the battery (C&I container or rack) 35-45%, the hybrid inverter or PCS 10-15%, charge points 10-20% and the EMS/software layer 5-10%. Delivered cost of PV in utility-scale terms fell below USD 0.30/W in 2025 in most markets, while C&I storage remains the single largest line item.

Market outlook

PV-ESS-EV is the fastest-growing product category for carport and commercial-roof applications, driven by falling PV and storage costs and by ESG procurement requirements. The integrated light-storage-charging model has become a standard tender format in China, Germany and the Nordics; in 2026 GoodWe, Growatt and Sungrow all extended their portfolios with shuttered carport and integrated PV-storage-charging cabinets.
